dschult3 - I also thought about the licensing deal being the biggest problem, but then it's strange that, by the games they chose, it's obvious they had Konami, Capcom and Square-Enix already on board - Tomb Raider, Einhänder and most RPGs I mentioned are Square properties, Castlevania and Silent Hill are Konami and Capcom had the Resident Evil sequels and Mega Man games (imagine if they included MM Legends). While some of them may be stuck in an ego war of some sort (maybe MM Legends?), I figure it would be easier negotiating more games from these publishers than going after others, like whoever owns Battle Arena Toshinden (Takara?). Ubisoft was also on board, considering Rayman, Destruction Derby and Rainbow Six. Here is the thing: Ubisoft owns Driver, which is a much better example of an earlier open-world game than the first GTA, being in 3d and everything - it would make more sense to just license it than licensing Rainbow Six, Destruction Derby and going after Rockstar to get GTA. And Driver is an abandoned series, so I imagine it would be less expensive to license it than GTA and Rainbow Six. And then, looking at their car games, there's the obvious absence of Gran Turismo. Isn't it a Sony property? I don't know why they would put Destruction Derby instead of going with GT (hell, it would make more sense even than Namco's Ridge Racer). I mean, there are certainly some licensing shenanigans in play, but Nintendo did it twice with no problems - you look at the SNES selection and it's spot on, including even a Castlevania and a Mega Man game (which shows that Konami and Capcom are open to negotiate these series). It's just that there are so many games more suited to it than stuff like Cool Boarders 2 that I think licensing deals don't fully justify their final choices. I'll give them props, though, for including Jumping Flash and Syphon Filter. Jumping Flash is known as a hidden gem of the PS1 and Syphon Filter was a big deal at the time. Wild Arms is another good one, if obscure (and it's a Sony property, so that's certainly why they went with it).

Well said Cervantes. Maybe the deal with Gran Turismo, and Gran Turismo 2 is the licensing of manufacturers. That is also licensing which is why Gran Turismo didn't have Ferraris, Maseratis, and Lambos for quite some time. Ridge Racer Type 4 is cool though, but the main issue is not going for all of those IPs it was so easy to obtain. I'm sure Activision would have been on board with Crash, and Spyro, specially now after the remakes.

stratogustav - Ah, I forgot the manufacturer's licensing side of Gran Turismo! I guess we'll never see rereleases in the series, it must be a mess to reacquire every license. Now I remembered that new releases of Out Run edited the Ferrari sprite, and even the name itself for Daytona USA was changed in one of its releases - it became Sega Racing Classic or something. Another PS1 series that was huge but the licensing would be a nightmare (because of the soundtrack) is Tony Hawk. It should be the go-to sports game of the PS1, but I see why they would never include it.

Could it be that those companies were being either highly selective with their licensing? Or maybe Sony didn't want to pony up more cash?

Could it be that those companies were being either highly selective with their licensing? Or maybe Sony didn't want to pony up more cash? I think it was a deliberate decision trying to have something for everyone. They probably got really terrible advice from someone, or asked the wrong kind of people. Another PS1 series that was huge but the licensing would be a nightmare (because of the soundtrack) is Tony Hawk. It should be the go-to sports game of the PS1, but I see why they would never include it. Definitely, that one too. I think it would be hard even for Activision themselves to get licensing for those games. This is one of the reasons Guitar Hero was affected too, people buying DLC, just to be gone on the next entry. This is why Rocksmith is still in 2014.

A 24h sale at an online store on wednesday last week lowered the price just enough for it to be under the price limit I had set for it, so I ordered one and it arrived today.

dschult3 I had set a limit of 500kr (Swedish Kronor), which translates to roughly €48/£41/$55 (using xe.com currency converter), and the price last wednesday during the sale was 499kr, the 3DS USB charger cable I also bought from the same place for 29kr, the shipping was 59kr and the billing was free, so the total cost of the order was 587kr. After the sale was over it went back up in price and the same online store currently has it priced at 648kr. The cheapest one available right now is priced at 629kr.

Remember when I said I wouldn't buy this thing? Well, for some unknown reason my local electronics chain store sold this suckers for 20 bucks a pop today. It wasn't even in sale, the lowered the price to get rid of them ans they didn't even care to advertise it. I got a hot tip from a friend of mine, and I didn't believe him at first. Even the guy in the store said to me: Are they this cheap now? So yeah, I bought one of these. I'm not going to play it that much, but it'll be cool to have sitting in my game room. I will play it, and try all the games, but even now as I look at roster of games. Damn that list is disappointing. There are like 3 good games, and the rest of them are meh.

Battle Arena Toshiden will thank you for the support.

I actually saw two of these at a local Meijer yesterday. They were discounted to $35. I still had to pass on it. My son was with me too, and he really wasn't interested in it either.

I bought mine for 20 bucks, and I still haven't been bothered to even try it. I was wondering if I should just sell it, but then again what could I possibly get for it? 10 bucks? It's a cool trinket, but not very exciting when it comes to using it. Good call about skipping it.

It was right next to some generic AT style console that used a Genesis style controller that had more games. Both were on a discount shelf, and no one seemed to care. How sad.
