Is it made by Sega? If so this is huge because I really want Genesis Classic system really bad.
Considering I can load the entire NES library into my NES Classic, and the entire SNES library into my SNES Classic, I want to be able to do the same on an official Genesis Classic.
The ultimate goal is to have a kiosk for each system considering the cables for the controllers are very short anyway.
It would be a great addition to properly start making a game room, next to my MK9 arcade cabinet, and perhaps my Thrustmaster T300 Alcantara, PS Move, Wii, Wii U, Switch, and PSVR.

This was originally going to be handled by AtGames, like so many other half assed Sega licenced plug&plays of recent years, and apparently Sega cut their ties with AtGames about half a year ago so they could make the whole thing and ensure the quality control themselves.

These are excellent news. My guess is they got a lot of feedback that made this happen.
stratogustav The software is being developed by M2 Co., they worked on the "SEGA AGES" series and the "Sega 3D Reprint Project".
The music and sound effects used in the menus are by Yuzo Koshiro who's made tons of music and sound work for countless Sega games over the decades.
I love M2. They are wizards at porting stuff. The fact that they are using an original composer shows this thing will have the love the PS1 Classic lacked. I can't wait.
I have mixed feelings about this. I'm actually in his camp:
At first, it sounds really cool. However, the Genesis has had the Atari treatment as of late. There are a thousand systems like these already. I know they suck (especially in the sound department), but they're out there. Plus, you have the newest Analogue Mega SG that was just released. Also, you have the 50 in 1 editions for the newest systems that JUST CAME OUT A COUPLE OF MONTHS AGO. I guess there is some nostalgia in it, deeming that it comes from Sega. However, what's the point? Is there going to be anything new in it? I think this is going to come out a little too late.

Not for me. I want this for the hardware replica, and because it is issued by Sega. It makes it official.
A collection we had too many times already, but a new official iteration of the console with original controllers, and with the opportunity to load the entire library, it's something we never had before.
Like I said in other threads, all these classic official systems are a dream come true. It is what we always dreamed as kids, at least I did, a full system, that is also plug & play, and with the official labels.

I've updated with international info now, seems they've changed quite a lot for the different regions.. in my opinion we're getting a worse deal, just the lack of 6-button controllers already makes me a lot less interested to the point where I'll most likely not buy one at all.

We have to accept the fact that just like with the PS1 controller without thumbsticks, the fat 3-button layout is the original controller.
The 6-button controller was a response to foreseen playing Street Fighter II on the Super Nintendo, and the DualShock was a response to playing Super Mario 64 on the Nintendo 64, so even though they are the better controllers, they are not the original.
For example if they ever make a PS2 Mini, I want the fat version, not the improved slim one. That's the original, and to me that plays a big roll because a replica is all about originality.

stratogustav That makes no sense, even less so here in Europe. In Japan it makes sense as they had the mega Drive with the 3-button controller longer than any other region as they got it earlier than any other region, but they still get to chose one or two 6-button controllers, they don't even have an option for a 3-button controller. We here in Europe got the Mega Drive later than Japan and USA, so we had the model 1 and the 3-button controller the shortest time of all before switching to the model 2 and 6-button controller standard. So Europe should've been the region with 6-button controllers only since a vast majority of us here never even knew it had a 3-button controller originally as that was such a short lived standard that most of us never experienced, I only ever used one once back in the day in a store where they had a demo setup with one, it was worn and torn and the second controller had been entirely broken off at that point. I thought it was just some kind of special demo version controller built into the cabinet and never sold to the public.
We also aren't getting the power adapter here, only the US market gets one of those.
The only good thing I can say is that they at least seem to be understanding what Nintendo failed miserably at and that Sony had a mixed bag of, the regional versions seem to be correct for once! PAL versions for PAL! We don't know yet if those are the actual versions that will be in the system, but at least it's nice to see they're using the correct covers.
Another enormous problem with the 3-button controller limitation is ofcourse the game selection. It will either not include any of the many awesome 6-button enhanced games (fighting games and Story of THor for example are nowhere near as good with the 3-button controller) and even if they include some of those games they'll all be a lot worse to play as a result making their inclusion more of an insult to injury than the great experiences they should, could and would've been had they just included the proper nostalgic controllers virtually everyone had here back in the day.
They messed up big and as usual, sadly, the European version is the worst overall with the worst controllers and not even a power adapter included to very poorly attempt make up for it like the US version is getting.
Overall it's nothing more than a huge middle finger to all of us here in Europe. They deliberately made it the worst here for no reason, but I'm willing to bet our version will be the most expensive on launch anyway!

I see, yeah that makes sense. How short lived was it?
All the Genesis consoles I ever saw while growing up had the 3-button layout. I never saw the 6-button one, I actually thought that was a Saturn thing later on, and for a while.
To be fair, the Genesis were extremely rare consoles between the people I knew. No one had one, the only ones I saw where at the stores, or in magazines.
So far PlayStation was at some point the only disappointment for me because of the lack of love on the interface, and the whole 50 FPS with the PAL versions been shoved to us.
The Nintendo ones are pure perfection to me. However the PlayStation one is now just as good after mods became available.
I'm sure the Genesis will have a mix bag of a catalog, but honestly I don't mind because my plan is always to put the full library anyway, and build some kiosks for these Classic systems.
In terms of fighting games. I grew up with the Super Nintendo, so I prefer to play those there. However in all honesty during that generation, fighting games were not completely suited for consoles. It was the arcades were the genre truly shined.
In fact, when I made my dream line up for the Genesis I did not include a single fighting game for it because of what I said. I feel the Genesis excelled more on other genres like shoot 'em ups for example, but I'll put fighting games there too just for the full library sake.
I'm sure at the time there were many people that had to learn those fighting games with the 3-button layout, which I'm sure it was a nightmare in comparison to the Super Nintendo, but to me it is nice to experience that exactly because that's closer to the authentic experience.
On the other hand, if someone was fortunate enough to have the 6-button layout I'm sure that person will feel nostalgic for it, and will want that instead, so I can understand that.
For me, I have zero nostalgia for the Genesis. I never played it when it came out, so my love for it is purely based on loving 16 bit gaming design, and the Genesis has an amazing library that offers exactly that, and that's why I'm excited for it.
With M2 doing the porting and Castlevania: Bloodlines being on it, I'm in. Preordered on Amazon. The lack of the six button controller will make Mortal Kombat and/or Street Fighter suck if they are included though.

There are people who swear by the TG-16 CD port, and that controller only had 2 buttons. Maybe it isn't that bad? (I've never played the Genesis version with 3 buttons.)
