I watched it so long ago that I don't remember if it was funny on purpose or an accident from being so over the top. Anyway, I had some good laughs with it and the chaotic battles were fun, kind of a movie version of EDF. scipioafricanus - How was the novel? Is it much better than the film? |

Paul Verhoeven is a really cool director. You can't go wrong with the maker of the amazing RoboCop, and Basic Instinct. I really like all his movies, so I end up getting the newer 4K version, and I definitely recommend it for anyone building a collection, I still don't have Showgirls, but it is one my wishlist to buy.

I didn't realize there were 7 iterations of this storyline. Roughnecks: The Starship Troopers Chronicles looks like a cool anime.

I watched it so long ago that I don't remember if it was funny on purpose or an accident from being so over the top. Anyway, I had some good laughs with it and the chaotic battles were fun, kind of a movie version of EDF. scipioafricanus - How was the novel? Is it much better than the film? There was a video that explained the differences well, but I can't remember where I saw it. One thing is the Marines have battle armor mechs that were included.
Paul used his experience in the Netherlands under Nazis control to color his depiction of the novel. So the movie is basically just used the book, not as source material, but as a "hey let's use that (title) for our movie" without opening the book.

How did he do it? See, behind the hopeful enlistment pitches, you see dismembered veterans, harsh punishments and general military incompetence, like flying battlecruisers too close together so they crash. And then, you got waves of ill-equipped infantry, just plopped down on the surface, just to die at the hands of these massive bugs that four times the size of your average jeep (I reckon they should've used flamethrowers instead of rifles). Also, note the Intelligence division dress like the Gestapo...
This movie was misunderstood because it wasn't advertised that way. Everyone thought it was going to be a generic sci-fi military flick, but the directer wanted to "subvert our expectations" by satirising the original novel, which was a more Lawful Neutral affair, featuring the author's idealised society in the future.
Whatever your opinion on it, this movie is interesting.

scipioafricanus and centipede - Thanks for clarifying. I think I watched it in the late 90s and never saw it again (not fully), it will be fun rewatching it now knowing about the Gestapo/Nazi references and the satirical approach. I do remember the action scenes being pretty dope.

Cervantes, allow me to give you a conservative-to-english translation, 'cause I need to clear things up here for the sake of integrity: scipioafricanus was bashing the film because it depicts the American military as utilizing sadistic/torturous punishments, i.e. the scene where the major throws a dagger into Busey jr.'s hand, the scene where Casper Van Dien's character gets whipped, etc. To my recollection the film doesn't take any inspirations from Nazi Germany for its depiction of future military, it's just intended to be an over-the-top parody of militaries in general. That's how I saw it, anyway. I think Scipio was just being a patriotic American conservative here, as usual. It's just his bias for the American military at work. Besides, the American military really is a truly, absolutely disgusting place to be. I'm not sure if they physically discipline their own soldiers, but I know for sure that our soldiers rape women, murder women, murder civilians, torture civilians, etc. Most of which is covered up. It's not a pleasant environment. |

Ah! En taro Adun, Melee! I thought this movie would be right up your alley. Got any other thoughts on it? It's gud. I saw it as a kid and I was absolutely delighted by the intense level of violence, along with the stunning special effects. I didn't recognize all of the "sly" elements of parody as a kid, so I would say I enjoy it even more now as an adult in 2022. Starship Troopers has gotten better over time, unlike shit like Star Wars and Star Trek, which have gotten worse over time because they actually seriously glamorize space colonization, unlike Starship Troopers, which parodies it. Therefore I think Starship Troopers is a better film than all of the Star Wars films and all of the Star Trek films combined. I rate it 4/5. I also think it's a much better film than Aliens, which glamorizes the American military and portrays far-right jarheads like Hicks and Hudson as the "good guys" while turning Ripley into G.I. Jane. I sincerely believe that Paul Verhoven is a better filmmaker than George Lucas, James Cameron and Gene Roddenberry combined. |
