And we'll leave it at that before this thread turns into Reddit-esque shitstorm, thank you very much. That's the sort of thinking that differentiates the pub from other gaming forums. Restraint. Better safe than sorry.

I only read non-fiction. I'm a huge nature freak, so I delve into any nature-related book that catches my eye. I've read several books about tropical rainforests, which have taught me so much about the ways that they are negatively affected by human behavior. Did you know the fast food industry is responsible for most of the deforestation occurring in South and Central america? And that the palm oil industry is responsible for most of the deforestation in southeast asia?

Spirit Bomb - There's one fiction that I think you would love: "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind", a manga by Hayao Miyazaki (one of the creators of Studio Ghibli). Besides the art and writing being amazing, I think you would really dig the story, as it deals with environmental destruction. There's also the animated movie adaptation, but it only tells around 1/4 of the story: The main character is basically an activist that is opposed to the destruction of the environment, so I think you would identify to that. This box set of the manga is phenomenal and comes with an awesome poster.

I didn't think anyone but me knew about it. At first I thought it was a little boring but then I got into it. I want to get the manga too which tells more of what happens. The manga goes into more detail then the movie does. That movie adaption was pretty long though it was like over 2 hours long. I was going to make a topic about it just to see if anyone else knew about it on here.

lukefonfabre388 - Hey, you're not alone in that, mate! The manga is awesome, really recommended - I read it last year and even framed the poster that came with it. A lot of games took some obvious inspiration from it, especially the Panzer Dragoon series, Saga in special. Sadly, I can't think right now of any other fictional books centered around environmentalist characters, although I can think of a few in which the environment is decisive to the story and almost a character by itself, like in Guimarães Rosa's Grande Sertão: Veredas (the title in english is lame: The Devil to pay in the Backlands), as the characters are a band of mercenaries crossing brazilian's rough backlands.

Cervantes: I think the environment definitely played a large role in "Dune" by Frank Herbert!

I've only read the first one-- which largely focuses on one planet and time period-- but want to continue when time allows. It's definitely epic (an overused word nowadays) in terms of thematic elements and scale.

@player1 - Ah, I've never read Dune! But I know how influential it is, and I even like both the movie and the 2000 miniseries. The number of books really seems overwhelming, but I want to read at least the first one.

Cervantes I'm aware. I've viewed the movie multiple times and I hate it. The Naussicca character is so pretentious and flawless that it's disgusting. It doesn't help that she's voiced by real life miss-perfect Alison Lohman, whom I also hate. While I don't hate it as much as a truly horrible environmental movie like Avatar, and while I do love the film's amazing visual imagination, I still can't say I like it. I've heard multiple people say the manga is better, so I'm tempted to check it out, but the lead protagonist is probably going to be just as pretentious as she was in the movie, considering they're both written by Miyazaki. Bleh.

Spirit Bomb - Yep, the manga in much more complex - it begins with Nausicaä being miss perfect as in the movie, but as soon as people start figuring out about her, various different factions try to use her to their own advantage (and other characters even become more central to the plot than her). Also, her initial instance of just preserving nature against humanity is heavily questioned, and by the end the story finds a better balance. Of course, if you haven't like the movie, then it's probable you won't like the manga either, but I just wanted to point out that the story is better developed there. By the way, I only watched the original japanese dubbing (it's superb), so I wouldn't know about their casting choices for the american one. And I agree that Avatar sucks.

It's not that the voice acting in the american dub is bad, it's just that it has a couple of actors I don't like: one that bores and annoys me (LaBeauf), and another one that I'm extremely jealous of (Lohman).
Avatar sucks big time. I truly hope that Avatar 2 gets heavily panned by critics and flops hard at the box office, but I know it's not going to happen. The people of this world love the taste of Cameron's dick too much to say anything negative about him or his overrated flicks.

Spirit Bomb a little harsh? Avatar's story is not much to write home about, but the visuals and 3D pioneering are really astounding.

I myself think the visuals are technically very competent, but the art style is just... Meh. I can really appreciate a not-so-good movie with creative visuals (the Tron movies, for instance), but even the art in Avatar bored me. This is highly subjective, of course.
