I liked Avatar, but didn't find it as amazing as some claimed it was. Not sure how a sequel is going to work (I'm guessing the humans will come back for an Iraq-style invasion?).

Don't get me wrong, it's not in my top ten or anything, but it's wrong to say it's horrible. It's an average movie with really good visuals. Therefore making it a little better than mediocre.

I honestly feel sorry for anyone who thinks Avatar's world is imaginative or even the least bit inspired. I really do. I had an extremely vivid dream of an alien world that was far more spectacular than Pandora could ever hope to be. None of the alien designs were original or credible and did not interest me or fascinate me at all, the forests looked stock, and the whole science behind the film felt half baked. Star Wars eps. 4-6 did everything that Avatar did, except infinitely better. Those films were smarter in their art direction and technology than Avatar was.
And my beef with Avatar doesn't end there. The film has many other flaws, like the fact that all the characters in the movie are complete jerks who are not likable at all (even the good guys) and are just there to move the plot forward (the protagonist in particular is one of the most boring, generic characters I've ever come across in a movie). The Navi creatures' designs fall into uncanny valley territory and have that hyper-expressive anime face that makes me want to puke every time I see them. The script is awful, the villain's are laughably overplayed and purely fictional (as is usual with Cameron's characters), and it is derivative of so many other films that I can't even begin to count (Dance's With Wolves, Princess Mononoke, Fern Gully are the main 3).
Again, I have to stress how sorry I feel for anyone who can't dream of better environments than this. Avatar is a film made for people who can't dream for themselves.

I think Dark Knight Rises and The Force Awakens make films like Avatar look even better than it is-- original even-- by comparison. Everyone seems to selectively critique certain films in a harsher way based on personal sensibilities rather than holding them *all* to the same objective standards.
Another problem is lack of frame of historical reference for many audiences. Face Off was a garbage film-- especially when you compare it to the films John Woo was doing while still in Hong Kong (ex. The Killer, Hard Boiled etc.). The problem? Most western viewers hadn't seen his earlier work so they think Face Off is good. Perspective matters.

How did this turn into a movies discussion? Regardless, Avatar is one hell of a bad movie. In fact the only thing I remember from it was blue people and sex through genitacles, but most of that can be blamed on Futurama rather then on the actual movie. Oh man!... Funny thing that in retrospect the movie of the original Avatar wasn't so bad when compared to James Cameron's Avatar.
I remember that back when the movie was on theaters I read an interesting article in which the author proposed that James Cameron is a dangerous man if you accept the possibility that he's actively trying to find the lowest point in which quality can meet high financial returns. Now consider this possibility: what if that's exactly the case? What if the Avatar series is just a way to guide Hollywood directors and producers in the challenge of getting paid the highest for the least?

Cameron just ripped it off.

It's a pity I can't always remember them. As for the movie overall, it was overhyped like Titanic. They were both 'snob hits': critically acclaimed by the big wigs, so the rest of us feel obliged to like it (sometimes, it's fabricated outright). And I personally didn't think the animation was a THAT good. That story about that guy committing suicide because he couldn't live in that world was obvious bullcrap to anyone with half a brain!

Hey mates, forgive me but I'll change the subject to books again. Have any of you read those book adaptations of video games? I never have, so I'm curious about how they are. One of the Youtube channels I always mention around here, Super Bunnyhop, made a fun video about them:

Cervantes I've read the first 7 Halo novels and they were pretty good if you like the Halo universe.

When has 3D ever mattered? I couldn't care less about 3D. I see it as a gimmick.

I see. Does that mean you own a 3D TV? I hear those things are expensive.

Cervantes I did hear Doom books were stinkers. There was also a Turok series while 2 was out. The book I had was pretty short and simple. Obviously not meant for any mind over eighteen. Now, do we all have favorite genres?
