I've been trying to post 5 games that I really like for the PS4 over on the "Top 5 PS4" thread but I always stumble over the fact that 4 of 5 of them are also available on other platforms including Steam, Switch or XB1. That begs the question of why bother getting a PS4 over the XB1 if you don't have games that are exclusive to your platform? Even better, why not wait the extra few months to get the same games over on Switch plus the Nintendo games that will always be exclusive to their platform?
I have an answer in mind but I'd like to hear from my peers; what are your opinons on console exclusivity? Is it still relevant?

It is more an investment in a system. I have been Playstation since PS2. Now why won't I go XBox; First I have a hatred/fear of Microsoft (Mac User). But more importantly, all the PSN store purchases; can't use those on Xbox One.
So unless you want to lose all your digital content, you have to stick with what "brung ya."

They are inferior to the Xbox and PS versions.

I was always a Playstation guy before the 7th gen. My first system was the PS1, then the PS2. Later we got an Xbox too, but played it rarely except for Halo CE and 2. So when the question of getting a 7th gen console, I was originally going to get a PS3, but ultimately chose the 360 because of Halo 3. It's possible to totally change platform like so.

PC has more exclusives than any console ever will. If your looking for a massive number of exclusive games to play try PC. The only thing keeping consoles alive anymore is there exclusives. People over hype the shit out of the ps4 but its really not that impressive of a system. I switched to PC and will never go back to console. You have so much more freedom with your games on PC and I can play online for free and it will always be independent of any company or service that forces you to pay money to play your games online.

As long as rushed ports, annoying DRM, and less than optimal specs exist there will always be a preferred console for each game.
I really like the idea of playing a Switch™ in my Craftmatic adjustable bed just as narcolepsy kicks in and I inevitably drain the battery and possibly drop it, or the grandkids wheel me out to the patio with it and leave me there for 5 hours, but I'm waiting for the inevitable New™ Switch™ with better joy joys and a better battery for falling asleep.

Yes, absolutely. The day that exclusivity goes away is the day we all play on glorified PC-TV-boxes. Exclusivity is the reason I will buy a Switch before I inevitably get a PS4. Exclusivity is the reason I will buy a PS4 before I even think of getting a Xbox One. Also cuz I'm a closeted Sony fanboy.

As more and more games are becoming multiplatform nowadays (a necessity because of the high costs of producing them), I think it's becoming more a matter of what hardware/services do you prefer, instead of what games you want to play. The exception being the Switch because of Nintendo exclusives; but even then, I think the Switch is attractive even to people who don't have interest in Nintendo games because it's a portable. So there you go, Balder: I guess the reason someone would prefer a Switch version of a game, even if it's a technically inferior one, may be because it's portable. For people who travel a lot that would be preferable. teddykongcountry - Great topic, by the way. I was also thinking about it these days after one of the only PS4 exclusives I was really interested (Nioh) got a pc port.

Glad to see the topic thriving. From what I'm gathering, name recognition, hardware capability exclusivity and game quality all factor alongside game exclusivity quite equally. I don't think the exclusives can be excluded but it's safe to say that the video game / console market is a'changing as are consumer tastes.

Think about how much better console exclusives would be if they were on PC. No more playing the game the way some developer wants you too. With mod support from the modding community it can be how you want the game to be. That sounds like a big advantage to me.
Also Drm can be removed or just use gog. There is no reason not to invest in a good PC. As for the bad ports it's the developers fault because there are so many different computers out there and they all have different hardware in them.

Consoles will always exist because there is a convenience to them. With PC you cannot just sit down and play. Can my PC run this? What settings should I use? Does this game require Steam? Why are people cheating in this game? I know newer consoles are skewing a little away from how they used to be, but they are still much more convenient than PC gaming. If consoles were discontinued tomorrow, I would be content with what I have now and never buy a gaming PC.

Consoles have always been simplified pc's. There for people who have no technical know how on how to build a PC when you could easily look up how to build one on YouTube. The only thing consoles have over PC is there simplicity everything else PC wins. I can use any controller I want and sit back on my couch and play.

I have to say barely play my Switch. I play the Wii U the most, then PS4, then PS3, then Wii, then Switch.
I started my Zelda profile in the Wii U so that is a factor. However another big one for me is where to play SNES, NES, and N64 games. So far the Switch doesn't have them.
I still have my hopes ups they will. However I'm also planning to start the Master Mode with my Switch version of Breath Of The Wild, and then there is Mario. So my Switch will start getting some live soon.
In a perfect world Nintendo would have trophies, VR, all the fighters, shmups, and racers, but that is not the case. That is why we are forced to have multiple consoles.
