Oh boy... This game was a mess on every system it came out for. The frame rate drove me insane when this game was ported, and I didn't know what to call it back then. I'll have to give the Lynx the leg up on this one, because it was in color. The Game Boy edition is rather impressive though, because it was put together on that dot matrix puke green screen. The Tengen version is actually more playable than the lousy Super Nintendo edition, and it had more levels because it was based off of the sequel.
(I think I may be convincing myself to change my vote...)

dschult3 I know what you mean, I genuinely like the Mega Drive version, it's easily the least choppy and most playable with the best controls of all the old versions I've played, the rest either have really terrible framerates or the few that run well and smooth had absolutely terrible controls, like using the mouse like an artificial steering wheel on.. Amiga I think it was? Maybe the DOS version used that too, I don't remember exactly but I think there were multiple versions that had that type of steering and they were all virtually unplayable imo, it was so bad I'd much rather take a choppy framerate with proper controls. About these two versions specifically I give the edge to the Lynx version simply because it's such a technically well made version given the hardware limitations, it's almost on par with the Mega Drive version, and that's no small feat for a handheld from 1989! The Game Boy version is working with quite significantly less power than the Lynx yet it still manages to be one of the smoother running versions overall, but then again the visuals in the Game Boy take a very big hit as a result, bigger than most other versions for sure, and it's still fairly choppy, so as impressive as both of these versions are, and taken into account that the Game Boy version is based on the sequel which has some new cars and tracks added, I still gotta hand it to the Lynx version where the visual downgrade was kept at such an impressive minimal. Though if available I'd recommend playing the Mega Drive version on a Nomad any day over these two!

Considering I never played most handheld games I guess I can still aproach this as a buyer deciding which one to buy. In this case I would say Hard Drivin' looks more fun.
