You know, I've never played one of these games. I hear it takes up a lot of your time...

I've only played the games that came before this, I've played no version of 3 or any of the games that succeeded it.
From what I can tell though the same principles apply to every new game in the series, just like virtually all sports, pokemon and dynasty warriors games. Basically they get more of the same, with some minor technical upgrades, some new customization items for your character, new weapons, new traps, new monsters and new locations to hunt monsters in. Otherwise very much the same formula and execution. You could skip several games and jump straight back in at any time with a newer one and it'd be like you never left. This was at least true for the ones I've played, and from what I can tell from screens, videos and text info, it still remains true even with the last games in the series.
The ones I've played have all been good but I've had too many other games I've wanted to play more to justify sinking any notable time into any part of the series I have available to play.
Since I've never played any of the 3DS games I don't know if they come with any new issues or problems not previously found in the PS2/PSP games I've played, so I won't be voting in this battle until I've gathered more info on the 3DS game.

I always think of this IP as part of Nintendo, even though it is Capcom, so I would have to vote for the 3DS version here.

I always think of this IP as part of Nintendo, even though it is Capcom, so I would have to vote for the 3DS version here. That's funny, until looking it up for this thread I always thought of it as a PlayStation brand exclusive series myself, as that's where it started back in 2004 on PS2, and it grew big and became huge and popular on PSP in the years that followed. It didn't appear on PC, xbox and nintendo hardware until many years later, it wasn't until 2009~2010 when the earliest multiplatform games in the series came out in Japan, and it would take a few more years for any multiplatform titles to reach the rest of the world. The newest game in the main series, Monster Hunter World that came out last year, is available on PS4, PC and Xbox One only, no Nintendo versions. 3DS and Switch got a new game in the Monster Hunter Generations spinoff series recently instead, but if I understand it correctly the Switch version is just an enhanced port of the 3DS game, so far from a major title release, just a spinoff sequel port.

Makes sense. Funny enough I play Senran Kagura on the PlayStation console (PS4), yet I remember seeing the older titles for 3DS, so even though I play it on PlayStation, I always think of it as a handheld Nintendo IP.
