So I went and watched it. The sum total is a 7/10 film with some very beautiful moments, and some very generic moments. It has some near-climaxes which make it feel like bunch of mashed ideas that happen one after another (and it kind of is a mash-up of ESB and ROTJ). But like I said, 7/10, and with a lot of the fat cut from it it's one of those films that could easily be 9/10 (again, on it's own as a film). but as a Star Wars movie it kind of pisses all over the long time fans, cleans them up, apologizes for pissing on them, promises it'll never happen again, they have no idea how it happened, it's never happened before, I mean it's not like I meant to whip it out and just pee on you like that. Then it's like 'just kidding I kinda did mean to go R. Kelly on you'.
...in order to move the story along and tell the story they want. If that makes sense. Kind of like how George pissed on himself when he made up midichlorians and a new kind of SW with the prequels.
Heck if I were Jay Jay Abrahams I'd feel a bit pee'd on myself. You go and set up a new trilogy with the exact same stuff as before and this new guy says 'forget you Jay Jay I'm gonna pee on you and your story'
and some of the generic stuff is the exact kind of needless fluff we didn't need to see in the prequels. You can tell there were a few weirdos at the writers meetings trying to get their dumb idea in the film in spite of the directors vision, which is too often the case with these movies. And the metaphors and euphemisms about blossoming into womanhood
what with that there vagina tree cave and that hole which is covered with something that looks suspiciously like pubes and the force womb of discovery and the falling for the bad boy and the hand sex and the laying on your back waiting to be deflowered
yeah I picked up on that and also the incessant nagging and shit-testing. Jeez. And I thought C3PO was a biddy.

Watch the Angry Joe video. There's about a zero percent chance of me watching Angry Joe or anyone else whine about a movie for an entire hour, man. To be honest, I don't really care about the new characters, so I'm not bothered at all if the way that JJ Abrams set them up to be has been changed from what was expected. In fact, I didn't much like Ep VII as a whole. If it were up to me, Rian Johnson would be back for IX and not JJ. VIII, even with its flaws which I admit are there, was a more enjoyable movie by a long shot. I've already seen TLJ twice. If I never see TFA again, that'd be just fine with me.

You'll be happy to hear then that Rian Johnson was confirmed to be the director for a new trilogy even before thia film came out. Star Wars will become the new MCU I guarantee it.

I'm going to agree with Balder that The Force Awakens sets up new characters well, but at the same time that's where I'll stop agreeing. TFA isn't as good of a movie as just about any good movie released in 2017. Even if you're super picky and you want to watch only space operas, there were Valerian, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 AND Thor Ragnarok, and all of those were better than TFA! And all the other successes* of 2017 were better than TFA! It's nuts how at this point we're just trying to see Star Wars as good inside its own series instead of good in a general sense. *using this word just in case someone wants to make it look like I said Justice League was better than TFA.

The first one had great humor, but the second one turned up that diarrhea dial of cringy humor to 11. Disney has disappointed me incredibly this year with Rogue One, The Last Jedi, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Spider-Man Homecoming. I was excited for all of these, but each one have left me utterly angry and disappointed.

You're a bad moderator Dan E. Moderator . You haven't even added this thread to the list and some of the titles were in wrong alphabetic order. But don't worry, good old ModeratorNumber2 fixed that.

The production values are excellent and the effects and cinematography are above average, imo. As a regular holiday blockbuster, I'd rate them as pretty decent. It's just that I love this series so much that I kinda hoped for more. I don't know exactly what that more is, which I guess puts the new team in a tough spot. Maybe the reason I liked Ep VIII so much better than the last two movies is that I've accepted that Star Wars is different now and judged it as its own thing. (Though it's probably just because I love Luke Skywalker.)
I read an interesting article from Business Insider with Rian Johnson explaining his choices for the characters: www.businessinsider.com/rian-johnson-mark-hamill-reaction-luke-skywalker-storyline-the-last-jedi-2017-12There are some spoilers, but the most interesting thing to me was that I get the sense that nobody at Lucasfilm had any idea what was supposed to happen after Ep VII. I would have thought all of that stuff, at least a simple story outline, would have been planned ahead. Apparently JJ just asked a bunch of questions in his movie (Who are Rey's parents? Why is Luke Skywalker in exile?) and just left it up to the next guy to go ahead. Kinda a weird strategy...
