I feel like I ought to watch Star Trek as it's a very influential franchise. It paved the road for all science fiction media to come. I know I've ridiculed Star Trek a bit in the past for not being on par with Star Wars, and while I don't think it'll ever surpass it, I do have the utmost respect for it and it does have a big spot in TV history. So therefore I bought the original series on blu-ray and have started watching it. I've only seen the 2 first episodes so far and while it's a bit simplistic, I do feel like it has a lot of charm. There's something fun and sincere about it, and as a big fan of Mobile Suit Gundam, I do see that MSG wouldn't exist without Star Trek. So what has the original run of Star Trek meant to you guys? Most people I know haven't even attempted to watch an episode, so I haven't had anyone to discuss it with. I'm very much looking forward to watch more even though the blu-ray set is very intimidating since it's 20 discs of content.

Watched them all over the years. While some episodes can get preachy with Gene Roddenberry (the first season of The Next Generation has him all over it; it got a lot better when he was moved away from it), it is the basis for modern Sci Fi. Having a comprehension of when it aired allows for a deeper understanding of it rather than it just being goofy (Episode where 2 black/white people are fighting is an example).
A couple really stand out: Trouble with Tribbles and The City on the Edge of Forever.
Bring them up and we can talk about the ones you want.

I've only watched some of Next Generation, but I want to get around to the original series at some point. I've heard lots of good things about some of the movies.

Star trek was my thing. I had a Trekkie phase. I even remember being able to wrap my mind around the final episodes of TNG.
But I'm disappointed that I've never, ever seen the tribble episode, except that tribute episode from DS9.

Cool off, I've seen it now. But you should've seen the DS9 tribute where they go back in time. They managed to blue screen Sisko and the crew into original Star Trek footage. I used to religiously set my VCR for when they aired episodes after 10:30 at night. But now, I just a casual fan, not a hardcore one. Star trek was my thing. I had a Trekkie phase. Especially the scene with the short skirt.

I love the Enterprise. It is one of the best designs in media ever. The show was so good that it was like watching an actual film, not just a TV show.

Been watching a couple of episodes more, and even though it's cheesy at times, I do love the style and the characters. These guys sure go on some crazy adventures. It's kind of ridiculous that they invent time travel fuel in the 4th episode, I wonder if they're ever going to use that again. The fighting has always on the ridiculous side of the spectrum, but still, there's something quite unique about it, and they do throw each other around a lot, which is awesome. The theme song is fantastic, and the original Gundam theme song is heavily influenced by it. I'm surprised by just how people are killed in each episode. I'm starting to wonder when they'll run out of people.
Anyways, on the Blu-Ray set I have, there's the option to watch the show with the original VFX or with the enhanced ones. What's your guys' opinions about this? I watched a comparison video before I started and decided to go for the original VFX as I honestly think they look better most of the time, and the CGI in the enhanced ones looking jarring as hell.

Yeah, definitely go original. The cheesyness is the best part, it is basically like watching Ultraman, or Godzilla.
My ancle had them recorded on VHS and he let me watched them on a school break, it was so long time ago that I can definitely watch it again.
The version I watched had Brent Spiner, LaVar Burton, Michael Dorn, and Magneto, and like I said, The Enterprise was my favorite thing.
I used to dream of having a ship like that in real life with my own harem inside travelling through space like some kind of Ulysses 31. What a dream that was!

I actually prefer the enhanced effects. I don't think they betray the source material the way the enhancements did in Star Wars. TOS had some stinkers, but some of the best modern sci fi was in that show, too.

That guy was my favorite character, I don't remember his name, he was cool. I think I saw two versions of Star Trek, one with Shatner, and one with Stewart, that I always confuse with Mckellen, I don't know who is who. They are always making out randomly for some reason.

I'd rather watch the original models than CGI.
