Nintendo just announced it will be closing the Wii Shop on January 30th 2019. I'm not a Nintendo guy, but seeing something like that close down is sad.

That's the sad truth about all of these online services. One day, they have to be shut down.

That's the sad truth about all of these online services. One day, they have to be shut down. But shouldn't there be enough money coming in from the Wii Shop for it to sustain itself? The fact it's being closed suggests that it isn't making enough money for Nintendo anymore. I'd guess sales are slowing. By setting a deadline, they might even persuade some people to make a last-minute purchase. But at the end of the day, Nintendo isn't looking for the Shop to sustain itself, they want to make money. They make more money if you buy a new console, like the Switch, to download games than if you keep using your 10 year old Wii.

Well, the only reason why it was still around was because the Wii U shop wasn't nearly as good. They got to push games through the Wii so they didn't have to get the licensing agreement changed. It is a shame, though, because the Wii shop had MANY Sega Master's System, Genesis, Neo Geo, and Turbo Grafix 16 games. I hope their new shop on the Switch is just as good.

So how does it work for downloading? For PSN, you have a record of what you bought, so you don't need to have it on your PS3 or 4. You can re-download what you own later. Does this mean Nintendo people will be out of luck if they don't keep their purchases on the HD?

I don't know what they are planning for the Switch, since the shop isn't running yet.

I had been afraid of these news for ages, I didn't want to believe it, but I guess it is a reality now. It is the only way to get Gradius III and many other classics I love that even the Wii U does not carry. I would advice people to get Castlevania Rebirth and Contra Rebirth as those are Wii Virtual Console exclusive, and are very solid entries for those series.

Heh, but apparently they make the best games out of all of them...

Heh, but apparently they make the best games out of all of them... Ah, the conundrum! As I always prefer going with physical games for consoles, and as I only play single player or local multiplayer, the bad online services from Nintendo don't bother me much. But they surely could get a little better in that area.

If you have an original Wii with a good collection of games downloaded, in a way you can make your mind to think of that Wii as your own physical copy of those games. After all they were obtained licensed and legally.

I still need to look at the store one last time before Wii points are no longer purchasable and remind myself if there is anything else I want.

As a matter of fact, I have never had a system die on me, and I still fire up an Atari 2600 every now and then. What have you had die on you Pimpjira?
