I generally only play JRPGs if they have good art direction (like Paper Mario 64 or the GBA-Wii Fire Emblems for example).
The only WRPGs I have experience with are Oblivion and Morrowind, but I appreciate the extreme amount of freedom (SPELLCRAFTING!) and depth (RPG mechanics) of Morrowind more than anything, as well as the infinitely large list of console commands available to the player, which makes modding unnecessary for me.

Do you prefer a story that takes you all around the world, or a gradual dungeon-based configuration with a hub area, like with Diablo 1? What kind of setting: light fantasy or dark fantasy? Or how about comedy?

Or how about comedy? I like variety so all of those things are good depending on my mood. Right now what I'm playing is dungeon based, light fantasy, and is pretty silly at times. (Demon Gaze 2) But next one I'm thinking of is a serious SRPG Tactics Ogre.

Pacing/hours: how long should a typical level take?

RPGs generally don't have levels...
The segmentation there is typically between story chapters, and/or world area relocation. But between those, they should each be at least 3-8 hours to be satisfactory I'd say, for a game with about 5-7 chapters...

Has anyone ever thought of what actually makes up an RPG? Instead of, say an open world action adventure with RPG elements?
Are the Zelda games RPGs? Howabout the recent God of War?
If not, why not?

leaon79s Zelda is definitely an RPG, Link is basically a default avatar. RPGs in my opinion are games that required you to level up to progress. That's not to say in some cases some players can have mad skills, and beat up enemies they're not supposed to beat yet, but for the most part it is understood that a certain level must be achieved to clear sone specific areas of the games. To me that's the whole reason why they are called role playing video games, because your character is supposed to be an extension of yourself, which makes them different than other games. For example in fighting games your characters are already balanced, and the ones that level up as they play more, and more, are the actual people playing the game, not the characters. Notice I said level up to progress. If a game has the option to level up, but it is not necessary to do it in order to progress in the game, I don't call that RPG, just regular action / adventure games.

I dunno, I think Zelda being an RPG is some serious concept creep. I can't see Zelda being anything other than an action adventure game. Even trying to tie together elements that Zelda games and RPGs have in common is a stretch. Are we gonna call every game where you name your character (or where the character is silent) an RPG now? Or every game where you can get a different item?
An RPG has to let you have some sort of meaningful input on who your character is, including stats, different equipment/armor, moves/spells, and so on. That's why a silent protagonist doesn't necessarily make an RPG, because it's just the lack of input.

RPG: Role Playing Game. Role Play. Multiple people have multiple roles. Some tank, some nuke, some heal.

That's exactly what Zelda is, and that's why I let it slip. The thing about Zelda is that it is right in the middle between Eastern and Western RPGs, having dungeons, armor upgrades, hearts level up, energy level up, items level up, weapons, magic chants, and just straight up exploring.

Then what's the role you play in the Zelda games? It depends of the entry, Hero of Time, the Chosen Hero, Hero of the Minish, Hero of Legend, Hero of Hyrule, Hero of Twilight, Hero of Light, Hero of the Skies, Hero of Wind, Hero of Trains, etc..

Then by that token, you're a Demon Hunter in Devil May Cry, a Dracula Slayer in Castlevania, The Dragon Ninja in Ninja Gaiden, The God of War in God of War...
You play those roles, yet they are not Role Playing Games...
