Alright then, so we have a full definition as it was originally intended! Cutting out all the frill. This is your brilliant Einstein-level definition of a Role Playing Game... Hmmm... I'd like to say something but I know you'll defend it to the death, just as you have with @winners & cervantes... Wonder what a poll would say... Haha, nah what you quoted is the concept only, and yes it is Einsten level, but that was an explanation. The full definination I gave it already too: Role-playing games are a type of game in which the playable character assigns a role to the player (hero, wizard, warrior, king), and becomes the player's persona (his representation within the setting). The player then uses this playable character (avatar), to perform the actions, strategies, and decisions necessary to progress in the game. A progress that is primarily dependable, but not limited to the avatar's skill development, even when some RPG entries may still ask for the player's skill development too. I do agree with Cervantes on the changing numbers, not being fixed (this is what development of character is), it is just the randomness what I was directing more towards a sub-genre. By the way, me and Cervantes love these long ass discussions, specially if they are camp related, but I didn't know you like this too. That's a side I didn't know of you leaon79s.

Lol! Looks like Leaon got goosed! Don't sweat it, man. Happens to the best of us. Hey, maybe Dan E. Kool can come here and give us his definition of RPG! Also, the definition of camp. It wasn't an oversight that I haven't posted here. The pain and the scars are still there from last time.

Heh, not when I have work to do and my mental focus is preoccupied thinking about this nonsense... Then decide it a poll, lovebirds. You got it bro.

I want to make an RPG but my conscience tells me I'll just be adding to the techno-fog that surrounds society and which keeps everyone down. Then again, people would most likely divert themselves with something else, if not something I make. What do you guys think?

Then again, people would most likely divert themselves with something else, if not something I make. What do you guys think? If nothing else it'll serve as a good learning experience. The only way I see RPGs keeping people down is because they can demand so much time from the player. Poor pacing is a design flaw in every other genre, yet for RPGs it seems to be a design philosophy instead. How many times have you heard the excuse "it gets good XX hours in" come from an avid RPG fan? This climate only exists because some designers try too hard to go for that D&D/tabletop experience, or are just looking for a place to dump their shitty anime screenplay.
I'm not even saying that you shouldn't make a long game, or that you should give your players instant gratification. As long as you have some respect for the player's time, you don't have to worry about making an outright degenerate timesink. Humans have always been looking for ways to unwind and entertain themselves.

Then again, people would most likely divert themselves with something else, if not something I make. What do you guys think? If I were to actually start making an RPG, which sounds better? GAME 1: South Park meets Play School meets Inglorious Bastards, resembling an old Flash animaiton. Your bosses include the likes of Shigeru Miyamoto, Putin, Ji Xinping, Gordon Ramsay and a mystery final boss. You fight bogans, schoolgirls, neckbeards, furries, islamists, police, millionaires, etc. Yeah, it's like that. There's be spoofing celebs and modern day fears =cough= CO =cough= VID =gack= You can salvage material from items dropped by enemies and gradually upgrade your equipment. you have a magical van that produces power ups, missile strikes and recover party members, but if it's destroyed, GAME OVER. Armour pieces give new abilities depending on who wears them. GAME 2: A more serious story on a haunted 22nd century Earth. Art won't be so crappy and, if I can manage it, some good audio. Choose your party from a roster of 21 characters of 6 classes. You can equip skills Some characters prefer different weapons and skills over others, e.g. three classes can use healing and buff spells, but only one of them can use their luck as a bonus. Other will prefer guns to swords. You pick up new and better weapons and abilities on field, like in Diablo. You fight ghosts, haunted machines, mutants, warlocks while rescuing lost soldiers and explorers, while advancing the story by recovering and listening to audio logs, some talking about how the world got to that stage.

Those are cool RPGs, although my RPG would be nothing like that.

centipede I like Game 2, definitely got a clearer image in my head of how the game would play. That said, maybe you can find a way to work a little bit of the story from Game 1 in. Contemporary issues and sci-fi dystopias both are a bane to indie game writing, but if you can find a way to convincingly fuse bits of them together you could make a really engaging story.

Contemporary issues and sci-fi dystopias both are a bane to indie game writing, but if you can find a way to convincingly fuse bits of them together you could make a really engaging story. GAME 1: Like I said, it's party South Park so any statements are satirical. One scene I've written is a spoof of the Illinois Bridge Nazis from Blues Brothers ("I hate Illinois feminazis!"). Also, Jimmy Saville and the sex sandals from the BBC the 'Island of Sodom', as opposed to Island of Sodor where Thomas the Tank Engine lives. Also: "How can I be pregnant? I'm non-binary and don't identify as female!" GAME 2: A subplot of GAME 2's is trailing a lost alien archaeologist and his (undead) human bodyguard. You find logs where he narrates his findings and speculations e.g. he mentions a drop in birth rates giving rise to a sex robot industry, in an area where sex robots are enemies. Also, a reference to 5G and the internet where an old phone comm centre has come to life and attacking intruders with electromagnetic beams, because there is something living inside the mainframe...
