Trains are 19 Century tech. No matter how fast the train goes, you can only go where the tracks take you. Why do you think Socialist/Statists like them? They can control where the people travel.
Cars are freedom. Get in and drive where ever you want. Certain cars don't even need roads.
Have you ever considered the fact that public transportation is much greener than driving automobiles? That alone is reason enough to have trains in every major city. You act as if using automobiles has no consequences on the planet or anything. And there's the fact that public transportation is cheaper than owning a car, and less of a hassle (all you need is a rail or bus ticket). I'm not going to lie, that was probably the single most ignorant post you've ever made. Are you aware that the entirety of Europe still uses trains? As well as Japan? "Regressive technology" my ass. With that said, I'm not against car ownership at all. I just don't like it when it's the only option for getting around. As stratogustav said, traffic jams are the biggest pain, and streets create a disgusting amount of impermeable surface. And it's not like Europe or Japan only allow you to have one or the other; Japan for example allows you to take just about every kind of transportation imaginable, from cars to trains to subways to buses to boats and bicycles. Japan is a bit different because its so compact there. Even in some of the population centers where I live, its still sprawled sprawled out enough that taking a bus isn't practical. The bus doesn't stop by my house, and it doesn't stop at my work, and it doesn't stop by the store.

Look, we all don't need to know what kind of tech you put in your ass. cobretti Didn't you discuss this with stratogustav? I think you started something with our young man here.
1. My one auto has no effect on the environment that I care about. It's a Subaru so I have a SJW Get out of Hate Free Card.
2. Look at a map and compare how long it takes to get from London to Paris vs New York to LA (distances in Japan not so distance either, Ringo). I'll even give you a break, how long does it take to ride a train from Chicago to LA? Trains are, again, 19th century tech. 3. Since the US is a bit wider than Japan and Europe, we have something called "airports." Some 20th Century tech, wink. (that means it is past the 19th which would be... before the 20th... follow me, Hero?) 4. And since American's don't have time to waste sitting on a train for days to get to California from, say Indy, they hop on a plane for a few hours. We moved on from trains a while ago.
5. Try riding Public Transit in a big city, and not get hassled by people of questionable character. In my car, I can drive away from them. In the same train car... a bit harder.

Spirit Bomb, you have to be reasonable, cars are a big deal if you don't live in the city. What cobretti is saying is the reality we live in. As much as I would love a high speed train that would take me from Santa Clarita to Las Vegas, Seattle, Palo Alto, or San Francisco, and then back to L.A., Sacramento, or San Diego, the distances here are very large, and to build something like that, without making it like 19th century tech, like scipioafricanus is pointing out, it would cost the kind of money that not even U.S. can afford. Also you probably would protest against it, considering many trees, and as a consequence many animals around it, would have to be killed to open a path for it. Japan and South Korea are very conservative in their politics, even their porn is censored, they have strong immigration laws, and environmentalists don't get in their way when it comes to infrastructure development. We can't have those luxuries in U.S., our political circumstances are very different.

cobretti stratogustav What about trolly-trains or trams? They are built for the purpose of local travel and I'm pretty sure they're still used in Europe and other places. Very green and don't require paved roads like cars and buses do.

So is getting places quickly. Well if it means more greenhouse gas emissions, then I won't support it. Sea fare and trains are both slower than taking a plane, but they're also much greener, which is why I support them over air travel.

The trains I was referring to earlier are the fast ones like those special ones in Japan that can reach 375 miles per hour. Those alternatives you are mentioning are not worth the hassle.

Unfortunately I don't think I have enough money to afford one. I've heard they're very expensive. I could afford a smart car, though. In Norway electric cars have less taxes on them as an incentive. I've been meaning to say: since the US still largely uses coal as a source of energy, using an electric car here would probably be just as bad for the environment and might actually be worse. I don't know what Norway uses as energy sources, but most US states have not yet fully adopted clean energy. This is especially true in conservative states like Wisconsin; one of the first things Scott Walker (our governor) did when he took office almost a decade ago is strike down any and all clean energy plans our state had. He also canned a proposed local railway system from what I hear. I don't know the specifics but I'm pretty sure gasoline creates less greenhouse gas emissions than coal.^ crossed out = I was wrong

Yeah, and 99% of your money comes from oil sources.

99% of Norway's electricity comes from water sources. Yeah, and 99% of your money comes from oil sources. I wouldn't say that it's 99% oil, but it's our main income yes. Our oil companies are investing into alternative energy resources which is great compared to the big ones over in America who keeps that shit on lockdown.

I've decided that I'm going to buy a moped or very small motor scooter for short trips. I'm so freaking tired of driving my disgustingly-inefficient SUV everywhere.
By the way, are electric scooters a thing? If not they should be.

By the way, are electric scooters a thing? If not they should be. Electric scooters exists, but they suck. They don't go fast enough to be practical. They can sort of replace a bicycle if you're not worried about looking like a jackass.
