The other day I had to take my truck to the local auto shop after both the hand brake and primary brakes broke. Then when I described other symptoms my truck had, the owner expressed concern that something serious was wrong with the engine as well.
On top of that, car insurance is mandatory and costs over half a grand a year at least. My total vehicle expenses this year is easily going to be in the several thousands of dollars.
But the biggest issue I have with our transportation is that there is no other alternative than car ownership. There are no railways connecting towns. The only railway system is Amtrack, which is merely an alternative (albeit a good one) to taking a plane for traveling across the country. That means right now I only have my bike to get around.
So, in conclusion, I hate our transportation because:
-It's expensive
-It's very un-green
-There are no real options outside of automobiles for local travel. Bikes are great but not in the winter, late fall or early spring when it's cold (as it is here in the northern mid west), and buses are only available in large cities and (sometimes) for cross country travel.
Our transportation system is one of the reasons why the US is the country with the highest greenhouse gas emissions. I have my doubts that even electric cars would have a less negative impact on the environment than trains at this point in time.
TLDR I despise the lack of railways in the US and cars being mandatory.

Get an electric car if the environment is on the top of your list.

Get an electric car if the environment is on the top of your list. Unfortunately I don't think I have enough money to afford one. I've heard they're very expensive. I could afford a smart car, though.

Our country would definitely benefit from having speed trains like those in Japan, South Korea, and Hong Kong. The Metro is OK in cities like D.C., Boston, Chicago, and New York, but everyone else is pretty much screwed.
I like car ownership, but traffic is a bitch, so having an efficient alternative would be ideal. Not having that kind of transportation system more widly available gives the country a sensation of having a serious problem of lack of development.

No matter how fast the train goes, you can only go where the tracks take you. Why do you think Socialist/Statists like them? They can control where the people travel.
Cars are freedom. Get in and drive where ever you want. Certain cars don't even need roads.

Don't agree with your Socialist comment, but owning your own car is something special. The first time you buy a car and have a license is truly special. Total freedom, go wherever the fuck you want.

I want to have both. High speed trains and cars. If I go to Vegas I don't want to drive 4 hours if I can be there in minutes using a high speed train. If I go to the grocery store to buy food then, yes a car is more ideal.

I actually didn't buy it myself. It was my mom's who gave it to me when I wrecked my old car (a Hyundai Elantra station wagon) in a traffic accident.

Have you ever considered the fact that public transportation is much greener than driving automobiles? That alone is reason enough to have trains in every major city. You act as if using automobiles has no consequences on the planet or anything. And there's the fact that public transportation is cheaper than owning a car, and less of a hassle (all you need is a rail or bus ticket). I'm not going to lie, that was probably the single most ignorant post you've ever made. Are you aware that the entirety of Europe still uses trains? As well as Japan? "Regressive technology" my ass. With that said, I'm not against car ownership at all. I just don't like it when it's the only option for getting around. As stratogustav said, traffic jams are the biggest pain, and streets create a disgusting amount of impermeable surface. And it's not like Europe or Japan only allow you to have one or the other; Japan for example allows you to take just about every kind of transportation imaginable, from cars to trains to subways to buses to boats and bicycles.
