I compared it to Kingdom of Heaven earlier, but the bright side is that those movies don't get you lost as much. And from my brief experience with the 90s anime, I'd say it's better to watch the movies instead, for the old anime had a very simple problem that feels unexcusable for this kind of material: whenever Guts hits someone with his sword, it doesn't look/feel like someone is getting sliced; that really killed the action scene I watched, and so I'd rather gather additional information from other sources.

I'm watching Sword Art Online on Netflix with my Samsung Gear VR. It makes it so much more intense. I highly recommend it.

You are probably right, maybe I'm just liking it because I'm watching it on the Gear VR, which makes even the shittiest apps interesting.

I'm watching two anime series right now: Knights of Sidonia, which was recommended by stratogustav in another thread, and Rurouni Kenshin, which I always wanted to watch but never had the chance. Both are awesome.

I liked Sword Art Online well enough, though I find the later stories never quite live up to the first arc.

Ok, guys? Ooooooooooohhhhh!... Just how big is Berserk in Japan? I have expressed my views in the previous page already, but I must go back to it now, because the more that I think, the more I realize that series inspired more things then I imagined... So, Castlevania Lament of Innocence was definitely inspired by Berserk, and this is interesting because in that title IGA decided to give some background for the games, but as I see today, his background was to pick one character and "Beserk-fy" him. Interesting. Another game that puzzles me right now is Ninja Gaiden 2 originally for 360. People who understand a little bit of religion would be quick to notice what is actually happening in Ninja Gaiden 2 (and the previous Ninja Gaiden too), most people have no idea of the story in those games; but what if the religious connections in Ninja Gaiden 2 were made on accident? What if the writer was literally just copying things from Berserk instead? You are probably right, maybe I'm just liking it because I'm watching it on the Gear VR, which makes even the shittiest apps interesting. I love how quick you were to turn your back on SAO. Cervantes Kenshin looks like your type of thing.

spidershinobi - It certainly is! Also, it reminds me a lot of Samurai Champloo, which is a huge plus in my book. I do recommend that everyone watches Samurai Champloo, by the way; it's from the same director of Cowboy Bebop. And you're making a really good case for Berserk. It's certainly on my list. About Ninja Gaiden, I don't know much about its religious influences, but I do know that there's a lot of Akkadian/Sumerian/Babilonian stuff in there, especially obvious if you read something like the Epic of Gilgamesh. Seeing how Gilgamesh was influential over other japanese works in the 80s (the Tower of Druaga series, for instance, and some references in a few Final Fantasies), it's possible it was also an inspiration on Berserk. I'm just guessing, though, as I know nothing about Berserk.

***NINJA GAIDEN SPOILERS ahead*** Also spoilers on phylosophy behind BerserkThe modern Ninja Gaiden series started with Ninja Gaiden on Xbox, and yes, that game is a shower of sumerian mythology situated in what was a version of Babylon that never fell. For the skeptical, the geographical location of that game can be easily traced because that world's version of the Ishtar Gate is there; and for those who never played, that world's version of Ishtar is also there. Better yet, it depicts religion from the eyes of someone who's opposed to it; rather than depicting an atheist's view on religion, it is the view of someone who acknowledges it and yet isn't part of it (so now you guys know how I see your gods). The situation with Ninja Gaiden 2 (the one that shares most elements with Berserk) is different, while the story that unfolds in it wasn't well executed the background characters are easy to identify. The religion "built" for that game is much more western in structure, and thus it shares the most elements with the abrahamic religions in general. The most prominent divine characters this time are the 4 winged gods who stay in attendance of the throne of their master. "Waaaaaait! I don't know those guys, maaaannn!" The first time I know they existed, they were called Nike, Zelos, Bia and Kratos. Back to NG2, the plot is moved by Elizébet, who is recruiting help from her other 3 winged friends - interesting note is that Volf does have wings, just look closer - in order to recover her master, 邪神 Vazdah. If it wasn't enough, he's being helped by his prophet, whose similarities to other prophets is evident. Now, the reason why I think it may have something to do with Berserk is simple: there's another game from the Genesis catalogue in which Elizabeth is helped by a mad prophet to bring back her god, whose last form looks exactly like Vazdah (though he looks more like it in the sequels). So, were the writers basing it straight on religion or were they mixing things from multiple different games until the final product felt like western religion-inspired? ***END of NINJA GAIDEN SPOILERS***

spidershinobi - Wow. I got the sumerian references in the first one, but not the "Nike, Zelos, Bia and Kratos" from the second. That's a great find; it does make a lot of sense, and also may explain why I prefer the general atmosphere in the first over the second: I just find sumerian mythology more interesting than the greek/roman/abrahamic ones, even if they found a way to mix zoroastrianism in there. Yeah, NG2 seems to mix a lot of things in there, doesn't it? Maybe that's also why I think it doesn't have an identity as strong as the first game (or even Dragon Sword!); the first one has a great consistency between its story and art style, while the second one seems more "out there". I also never put much thought about NG being from the view of someone who is oposed to religion, but it certainly fits, seeing how the entire religious structure in NG seems made to oppress humans. Hey, I just found another thing that makes me identify with that game even more!

and Rurouni Kenshin, which I always wanted to watch but never had the chance. If you actually complete the whole series I'll respect you forever. The third saga ("The son of god") is one of the most boring canon shounen sagas I think I've seen in my entire life. On a side note, don't miss the OVAs, they're freaking awesome.

Fun trivia about that third saga, it was fully translated to latin American spanish and shortly afterwards Rorouni Kenshin was taken off the air due to pressure of the catholic church. Because of this I had to wait 10 years to watch the saga and when I did it was a major disappointment T_T
